Self-Awareness: Leveraging Athena for Personal Growth (Part 1)

By Moksha Agarwal 2021-05-21

So, tell me a little bit about yourself.

You start by repeating your name, whooshing through your childhood and cultural background, plodding—in a painfully detailed manner—through your extracurricular engagements, and finally circling back to that one important thing about being a Gujarati, Punjabi, Kashmiri, Assamese, Bengali, Tamilian, or Maharashtrian.

So, tell me a little bit about yourself.

Sounds simple, right? But this innocent question often triggers a roller-coaster response. Why? An acute lack of self-awareness. And that’s where we come in.

From the beginning of your personal mentorship to its very end, our counselors will enable you to process your past, analyze your present, and define where you are headed. Yes, there will be a lot of talking. But it will be preceded by a whole lot of writing—starting with the AoS and the Deep AoS.

Over the years, our founders and mentors have worked tirelessly to create, update, and refine these questionnaires. The Autobiography of a Student (AoS) consists of exploratory questions that will nudge you to reflect on your co-curricular and extracurricular activities. The Deep Autobiography of a Student (Deep AoS), on the other hand, is a meditative tool that will push you to examine the emotional, familial, cultural, social, and political influences that buttress your beliefs and propel you into action.

Next up is the Application Theme and Strategy (ATS)—a carefully curated document, rooted in your AoS and Deep AoS debriefs, and a detailed conversation with you and your parents. The ATS charts a course of action for our lead character, aka you. By drawing on your personality, experiences, and your past activities, the ATS outlines a vision for the future, defining where you are headed and why.

The real fun, however, begins when the application season is in full swing. As you craft your Common Application, Statement of Purpose, and countless other essays, our counselors will not only share coaching exercises designed to enrich your writing with your distinct flavor, but they will also work closely with you to express your ideas, beliefs, and experiences in a narrative format.

By the end of this process, you’ll possess a wealth of stories that exude your essence. And when the time finally comes, you will sit back, relax, and take your interviewer through the tumultuous, yet exciting journey of becoming who you are.
